5.2 What Makes a Good Client?

Why money gets you through the door, but character determines what happens next

Money gets you through the door.

Well. Usually.

You pay for my time. That matters. This is work, after all, and I am terribly fond of being paid. But money only gets you the appointment. What happens next is between two consenting adults. It does not guarantee chemistry, fascination, indulgence, favour, or that delicious little moment when I look at your name in my diary and think, Oh good. Her.  Him.  Them.  (After all, pronouns do matter, and I am an equal opportunity whore).

You want me to look forward to seeing you, don’t you?

Of course you do.

As a professional, I want to be good enough at what I do that you want to come back. But here is the part clients occasionally forget: this is a two-way street.

I have to want you back too.

Imagine paying a dominatrix and still not being invited back.

Awkward.

Most clients want to become a favourite in some form or another. Some imagine this might eventually result in freebies or special treatment. Bless them. Others have a much more interesting motivation: they genuinely want to please, serve, amuse, intrigue, or become useful.

Yes, I am making a value judgement.

Being a good client is not automatic just because your payment clears.

You have to show up.

And I don’t mean merely arriving at the correct time with the correct tribute, although we should certainly not underestimate how charming punctuality can be.  Fresh breath, clean fingernails, you get it, superb personal hygiene.

I mean: bring yourself.

A companion friend once told me about the ritual she goes through before seeing a client. She thinks about the version of herself she is about to inhabit: her energy, her manner, her presence. She described it as a kind of “scrubbed” version of herself. Aspirational.

I rather loved that.

And I think a clever client does something similar.

Time with a sex worker gives you permission to bring forward a version of yourself that perhaps does not get much daylight elsewhere. More obedient. More adventurous. More vulnerable. More playful. More elegant. More outrageous.

Possibly better behaved.

One lives in hope.

The interesting question is not really, “What sort of client should I be?”

It is: what sort of person are you going to bring me?

What is best about you? What is less impressive? What makes you fun to spend time with? What part of yourself do you want to cultivate when you walk through my door?

Because your money is exactly the same colour as everybody else’s.

You are the variable.  Show off.  Reveal your charm.

That is the fun part.

Of course there are basics. Know what you want well enough to tell me. Do not expect me to read your mind and then sulk because the fantasy playing inside your head failed to transmit telepathically across the room.

Know your limits. Tell me about them.

Be respectful.

Understand what I am and what I am not. I am a dominatrix, not your girlfriend, wife, sister or babysitter.

Well.

Not literally.

I am very often “Mommy,” and I can be an exceptionally entertaining babysitter under the right circumstances.

Generosity is lovely. Gifts are never required, but I have yet to meet a sex worker who was offended by flowers, thoughtful gestures, champagne, jewellery, books, lingerie, or the occasional wildly unnecessary extravagance.  Cars, houses, a big fat envelope of crispy banknotes accompanying any of the aforementioned items.  You get the point.  We like to be spoiled.  Who doesn’t?

We are remarkably resilient creatures.

And if you like our work, support it. Recommend us. Share something. Tell somebody. Be a good egg.

But none of that, by itself, makes you interesting.

I want to enjoy seeing you.

You do not have to be rich, brilliant, gorgeous, witty, experienced or sophisticated.

You do have to be present.

I want you paying attention to what is happening between us. I want curiosity. I want responsiveness. I want to feel that you are actually there with me rather than mentally ticking items off a fetish shopping list.

Because I am working too.

I am watching you. Listening. Reading your body. Remembering what you told me and noticing what you didn’t. I am figuring out when to push, when to tease, when to frighten you a little more, when to leave you hanging, and what exactly makes that primitive little part of your brain begin waving its hands in the air.

That takes attention.

And if I am paying that much attention to you, it is rather nice when you give me something interesting to pay attention to.

Your trust. Your curiosity. Your effort. Your willingness to play.

Have fun with me.

Honestly, that gets you surprisingly far.

But I am greedy.

I usually want more.

I want to see you relax. I want to see you become more comfortable in your body. I want to watch you discover things about yourself. I want to see you grow into the person who can handle what you keep asking me for.

That is much more interesting than simply giving you what you ordered.

Did you notice that I still haven’t asked whether our kinks are compatible?

Why do you suppose?

For one thing, there is very little in BDSM that I do not do, and my exceptions are fairly specific. If brown showers are central to your spiritual development, for example, I am afraid another mistress will have to guide you on that particular journey.

But there is a more important reason.

I want to know who you are.

Your kinks are not the meat. They are just clues.

Tell me what excites you and I start learning how your mind works. Tell me what frightens you and I learn something else. Tell me what embarrasses you and now things are getting interesting.

The more I know, the better I can control you, titillate you, turn you on, render you helpless, and flirt shamelessly with your lizard brain. Which, ahem, is what we both came for.

I rather like an aroused and obedient client who is perfectly capable of remaining aroused and obedient for quite some time.

Perhaps a very long time.

There is something beautiful about leaving you in the realm of what might be rather than rushing toward what was.

And more simply, I don’t particularly want you walking out of my studio five minutes after release blinking into the daylight and wondering what on earth possessed you.

Release can be very inconvenient that way.  The chaste shall inherit the earth my pet.

Sometimes I would much rather leave you with the experience still humming inside you. Let it settle. Let it irritate you slightly. Let it turn up again later when you are trying to concentrate on something respectable.

Let it become part of you.

And now you know why I probably won’t let you cum.

You’re welcome.

So yes, tell me what you want.

Tell me your fantasies. Tell me what frightens you. Tell me what makes you blush while typing it. Answer the questions on my contact form properly.

But while you are doing that, give me something else. Make me curious. Make me want to read your message twice.

Make me think, Oh, this one might be fun. Money gets you through the door. You are what makes me want to open it again.

Be that one.
